What I Drank Last Week from the Pip Wine Shop

Y Rousseau, Son of a Butcher Red Blend, 2017

Fellow Pips, this red blend is 45% Tannat, a varietal originating from the Madiran wine region in southwest France. It is also an homage to the winemaker’s roots. Yanick Rousseau was born in Gascony, the son of a butcher. He brought his love of wine and winemaking to the Napa Valley and has focused on the varietals common to his ancestral region, Tannat and Colombard.

The Tannat varietal is a hearty red grape that is high in tannin. It is at its best when blended with other reds. In this case, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2017 Son of A Butcher wine is purple, with hints of blueberry on the nose. On the palate it has a medium plus body with flavors of blackberry and plum. It finishes with a subtle hint of roasted coffee.

Son of a Butcher Red Blend is a balanced, drinkable, food worthy wine. I would pair it with rack of lamb, or a tomato-based stew.

Pick it up at the Pip Wine Shop for $19.00. It is another great value.

Cheers,

Jaque
